Colour

Body colours of horses vary. Black, brown, bay and chestnut are the principal ones but thoroughbreds are also bay/brown, grey and roan. Non-Thoroughbreds of both horses and ponies can also be dun, cream, piebald, skewbald, odd-coloured, whole coloured, palomino and appaloosian.

Head

Markings on a horse's head are a means of identification. These head markings are known as stripe, blaze, snip, star and white face. Size, shape and position are used for description both officially and unofficially.

Legs

These are also an important means of identification. The white leg markings begin from the hoof (foot) and reach up to the hock (hind leg joint) or knee (foreleg). The names of these markings are dependant on the length - either sock or stocking (shortest to longest).
